Fresno County Formation
Fresno County was organized in 1856
from Mariposa and Merced Counties. Parts of Fresno County's
territory were given to Mono County in 1861 and to Madera County
in 1893. The first federal census was conducted in 1860.

Office has birth records from 1873, marriage records from 1855,
death records from 1873 and land records from 1855.

The California
History and Genealogy Room houses a large and diverse collection
of materials that document the history of Fresno County since its
formation in 1856. Holdings include a large vertical file
containing information on many different subjects relating to
Fresno County, a complete collection of directories for Fresno
County cities and towns, atlases and maps, and microfilms of all
major newspapers published in the city of Fresno, and from some
other localities in Fresno County and elsewhere in California.

The Society
Archives includes manuscript and portrait collections which
contain personal papers and photograph collections of individuals
and families, biography files (genealogy/family histories) and the
Ben R. Walker History Files, 1850 – 1953: a collection of over
250,000 newspaper clippings on individuals and events (political,
civic, social, and cultural) in Fresno County and the Central
Valley.

The Roy J.
Woodward Memorial Library of Californiana is a general California
history collection with an emphasis on the City and County of
Fresno and the San Joaquin Valley. It also contains collections of
historical pamphlets, newspaper clippings, maps, postcards and
photographs, a large set of printed materials, regional/local
history periodicals, and manuscript collections dealing with local,
regional or California history.
